TMC Rebels Oust Mamata, Suspend Abhishek Banerjee
Dissident leaders of Trinamool Congress removed Mamata Banerjee as party chairperson and appointed senior MLA Arup Roy as the head while suspending national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, claiming they are the "real" face of the party.
It deepened the crisis of TMC following their their defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Led by Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, the rebel camp said the decision was aimed to rebuild the organisation and establishing control over party affairs.
"This is not a rebellion against Trinamool Congress. This is an effort to save Trinamool Congress," said.
"The party belongs to workers and legislators, not to one family or a select group of leaders."
Mamata didn't offer an immediate response but leaders loyal to her insist that the rebels have no authority to alter the party's organisational structure as their actions would be dealt politically and legally.
The battle could get dragged to the Election Commission if both factions formally stake claim to the party's name and symbol, similar to disputes seen in other regional parties in recent years.
