According to new research, in the year 2019, about 57,000 deaths in Brazil were linked to the consumption of ultra-processed food. Meaning if you are also fond of ultra processed food, then you need to be careful because new research has revealed a surprising.
In the changing times, our food has changed rapidly. Due to paucity of time, we are not able to focus on health. There is no time to cook food at home, so we have started relying on packaged food. The consumption of ultra processed food has increased. But there is a need to be careful knowing the things that have come out in recent research about ultra-processed food. Research has revealed that packaged food is bringing humans closer to death. 57,000 people died in Brazil in the year 2019 and all of these were linked to ultra-processed food.
Premature death due to ultra processed food in Brazil
Research has shown that eating ultra-processed foods like hot dogs, chips, soda and ice cream can have consequences beyond obesity and high cholesterol. A study published Monday in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine estimated that in 2019, nearly 57,000 Brazilians aged 30 to 69 died due to consumption of ultra-processed food. It accounts for more than 10% of annual premature deaths in Brazil among that age group.
research based on
Researchers say their study is the first to predict ultra-processed food and premature death. The study compared the deaths of people who ate the most ultra-processed food and those who ate less. This model was applied to the population of Brazil and the level of consumption of ultra-processed food. From there, he estimated that the number of premature deaths could have been prevented if people aged 30 to 69 had eaten less of that type of food. The researchers focused on this age group because the World Health Organization (WHO) considers non-communicable disease death to be premature at those ages.
Eduardo Nilsson, a nutritionist researcher at the University of So Paulo and lead author of the study, said he believes it is very likely that heart failure is contributing to these premature deaths. Diabetes, cancer, obesity and chronic kidney disease may also play a role.
Salt, sugar and oil are used more than nutrients
Foods that are ultra-processed tend to have more added sugar, salt, and oil. They are low in nutrients and high in many things including taste, color. Such as instant noodles, frozen pizza, store bought cookies etc. Nilsson further added that the ultra-processed foods that are contributing the most to daily calorie intake are breads, cakes and pies. Also there is butter, cookies, snacks, ham, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and beverages.
More deaths feared in US
Nilsson and colleagues estimated that if all adults in Brazil ensured that ultra-processed food consumed less than 23% of their daily calories, the country could have about 20,000 fewer premature deaths per year. A quarter of the country’s adults get 50 percent of their daily calories from ultra-processed food. In the US, on average, ultra-processed food makes up about 57% of daily calories. Nilsson says that even more deaths in the US may be linked to it. An August study found that people in Italy who consumed large amounts of ultra-processed food had a higher overall risk of death .
Include fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet
He said that ideally people should replace ultra processed food with fresh fruits and vegetables. Although some ultra processed foods are not harmful like whole grain bread, whole grain breakfast cereals. They are also a source of dietary fiber, which may reduce the risk of heart disease or cancer.
