Yogi Adityanath Announces LPG Refill Subsidy for 1.89 Crore Ujjwala Families
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday participated in a programme in Lucknow for the distribution of LPG refill subsidies to more than 1.89 crore eligible families under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
The state government has allocated around ₹1,500 crore for the initiative, aimed at reducing cooking-gas expenses for beneficiary households.
Uttar Pradesh government material says more than 1.86 crore families in the state have received free LPG connections under PM Ujjwala, along with free cylinder refill benefits around Holi and Diwali.
Yogi Explains LPG Cost and Subsidy
Addressing beneficiaries, Adityanath said the price of a domestic LPG cylinder was ₹983.45.
According to his remarks, the Union government provides subsidy support of around ₹335, leaving the beneficiary to bear ₹648.55.
The exact effective price can vary depending on the applicable central subsidy, regulated retail price and eligibility. Separately, the Union government has said Ujjwala households receive direct benefit support on eligible cylinders.
Free Cylinder Support Around Holi and Diwali
Adityanath said the Uttar Pradesh government had decided to provide an additional cylinder benefit to poor families under the Ujjwala scheme during major festivals.
He said:
“On the occasions of Diwali and Holi, we have decided that under the Ujjwala scheme, we will gift one cylinder to poor families.”
The Chief Minister said the savings could help households meet other festival expenses, including sweets and lamps.
UP Government Highlights Ujjwala Coverage
The UP Ujjwala LPG subsidy programme forms part of the state government’s wider welfare policy for low-income households.
Official Uttar Pradesh material previously recorded more than 1.86 crore Ujjwala beneficiaries and highlighted free refill assistance during Holi and Diwali.
Yogi Targets Previous Congress Governments
Adityanath also used the occasion to criticise previous Congress-led governments, alleging that obtaining a cooking-gas connection had once involved significant difficulties.
He contrasted that period with the expansion of free LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme.
Those comments represent his political assessment of earlier governments.
‘This Is Good Governance,’ Says Yogi
The Chief Minister described expanded LPG access and financial support for beneficiaries as an example of good governance.
He argued that welfare schemes should reduce household expenses while making essential services more accessible to poorer families.
Aadhaar Authentication Required for Subsidised LPG
The Centre has also tightened verification requirements for subsidised domestic LPG.
From October 1, 2026, consumers seeking subsidised domestic LPG at the regulated price are required to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication. The Petroleum Ministry said nearly 90% of active domestic LPG consumers had completed authentication by September.
Scheme Targets Household Fuel Costs
The UP Ujjwala LPG subsidy initiative combines central LPG subsidy support with state-level assistance for eligible beneficiaries.
The Uttar Pradesh government says the programme is intended to reduce the financial burden on poorer households while encouraging continued use of cleaner cooking fuel.
