Top seed Daniil Medvedev is looking downright determined this week in New York; determined to hang on to his world No. 1 ranking, determined to defend his title at the US Open.

The 26-year-old kicked off at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with a convincing 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 dismissal of history-making qualifier Wu Yibing of China, returning to the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year in New York.

“I played a great match, because I feel like the level was quite high,” said Medvedev, who has yet to drop a set through three rounds. “I was serving a little bit better than him, and that was the key today. But it was a really tough match, a lot of tight games. I feel like the level was really high.”

Medvedev is now in for his biggest test yet in enigmatic Aussie Nick Kyrgios, who since reaching his first-ever major final at Wimbledon is playing the best, most focused tennis of his career. This will be their third encounter of 2022 alone.

Daniil Medvedev is bidding to become the first man to win back-to-back titles here since Roger Federer swept the US Open crowns from 2004-08.
