Uttam Kumar: PM Modi Pays Tribute to Bengali Cinema Icon Ahead of Birth Centenary

Uttam Kumar, one of the most celebrated icons of Bengali cinema, was remembered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 137th episode of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, ahead of the legendary actor’s birth centenary on September 3.

Paying tribute to the Bengali cinema legend, Prime Minister Modi described Uttam Kumar as a “versatile performer” and recalled his lasting contribution to Indian cinema. He said the actor had captivated audiences through his remarkable portrayals and earned a permanent place in the hearts of generations of viewers.

The Prime Minister’s tribute comes ahead of the 100th birth anniversary of Uttam Kumar, whose influence continues to be felt across Bengali cinema decades after his death.

PM Modi Highlights Uttam Kumar’s Contribution to Cinema

During Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi highlighted Uttam Kumar’s versatility as an artist and his enduring popularity among film audiences.

“On September 3, we will mark the birth centenary of legendary actor Uttam Kumar. A versatile performer, he captivated audiences with his remarkable portrayals and earned a lasting place in the hearts of people,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also drew attention to Uttam Kumar’s association with acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray, particularly their collaboration on the landmark 1966 film Nayak: The Hero.

According to Modi, film lovers believe that Satyajit Ray had Uttam Kumar in mind while writing the screenplay for Nayak: The Hero. The film remains one of the most significant works in both the actor’s and director’s careers.
