The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 concluded on Thursday, April 23, with a staggering approximate voter turnout of 91.46%. Braving heat and a charged political atmosphere, millions of voters across 152 constituencies exercised their franchise to decide the fate of 1,478 candidates.
The Numbers: A Surge at the Booths
The Election Commission of India (ECI) reported a steady climb in numbers throughout the day. While the 5:00 PM provisional figure stood at 89.93%, late-evening surges in rural belts pushed the final approximate turnout to over 91%.
District-Wise Turnout Highlights:
Jhargram: Emerged as the leader in participation with a massive 90.53% (as of early reports).
Paschim Medinipur: Remained a frontrunner throughout the day, recording high engagement in the morning hours.
Malda & Murshidabad: Despite reports of sporadic tension, both districts saw high numbers, with Malda crossing 89%.
Kalimpong: Recorded a robust 81.98%, showcasing strong participation in the hill regions.
Massive Scale: Voting took place across 16 districts, covering over half of the state’s total 294 seats.
High-Profile Battles: This phase included the high-stakes battle for North Bengal and the Jangalmahal region, traditionally pivotal for any party seeking a majority in the state.
Voter List Impact: This is the first major election following the ECI’s massive voter list revision, which saw over 91 lakh names removed or updated to ensure a “clean” electoral roll.
The focus now shifts to Phase 2, scheduled for April 29, 2026, which will cover the remaining 142 constituencies, including the crucial Kolkata metropolitan area.
The counting of votes for all 294 seats is set for May 4, 2026.
