West Bengal is gearing up for a spectacular public celebration of the FIFA World Cup final as the state government prepares to organise live screenings of the blockbuster clash between Argentina and Spain at venues across the state.
For the first time, football fans will be able to watch the World Cup final on a giant screen at Kolkata's iconic Nandan complex, creating a stadium-like atmosphere for thousands of supporters.
According to sources at Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is expected to inaugurate the screening at Nandan on Sunday evening. Several ministers, senior bureaucrats, sports personalities and celebrities are also likely to attend the event.
The initiative is being coordinated by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department in collaboration with other government departments. In addition to Kolkata, giant LED screens will be installed at key locations in every district, allowing football lovers across West Bengal to enjoy the final together. District administrations have already been directed to complete the necessary arrangements.
Official sources said the Sports and Youth Welfare Department has sanctioned ₹1 lakh for each district to organise the public screenings. A notification regarding the allocation has been issued by the department's Secretary, Rajesh Pandey.
Preparations have been underway for several days under the Chief Minister's directions. Government engineers are overseeing technical arrangements to ensure uninterrupted live streaming, while officials are finalising administrative and logistical plans.
The Nandan-Rabindra Sadan-Academy of Fine Arts complex is being transformed into a football festival venue with the national flags of Argentina and Spain, themed decorations, jerseys, face-painting stalls and other fan engagement activities designed to recreate the excitement of the World Cup final.
Kolkata Police have also been instructed to implement comprehensive security arrangements to ensure the safety of spectators during the late-night event.
Several former and current footballers are expected to attend the screening at Nandan, along with film personalities and other distinguished guests.
