West Bengal Recruitment Scams: In connection with the ongoing hiring scams in West Bengal, the CBI conducted raids in different parts of the state on residences belonging to a TMC MLA and 2 councilors. The alleged scams are in
connection with out-of-turn recruitment of candidates in schools and municipalities in the state. The
raids began on Thursday morning around 8.30 am. They were conducted on the residences of councilor
Bappaditya Dasgupta in Kolkata, and Debraj Chakraborty’s in Teghoria-Rajarhat. The agency searched
TMC MLA Jafiqul Islam’s house in Domkal in Murshidabad and a college run by him in Cooch Behar
district. As per sources, more than 25 L INR was recovered in cash from Islam’s residence.
“These raids are being conducted as a part of our investigation into the teachers’ scam in West Bengal.
We are questioning the people whose homes and offices are being raided," said an official of the CBI
team.
The West Bengal school recruitment scam came to the fore sometime last year accompanied by the
recovery of huge piles of cash and the subsequent arrest of former State Education Minister Partha
Chatterjee. Over the months, the CBI has been conducting raids on suspects of the alleged scam leading
to numerous arrests of leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress Party.
