Test series lost to South Africa – Kohli stripped of captaincy
In the beginning of 2022, Test series was played between India vs South Africa in which India had to face defeat 2-1. Despite India winning the first Test match of the series, they lost the subsequent two matches. The entire blame for this defeat was put on the head of captain Virat Kohli and he had to lose his captaincy. Taking away the captaincy from the hands of Virat, one of India’s best captains, was the first bad omen for Indian cricket.
ODI series lost to South Africa
Amidst the heat of losing the Test and being stripped of the captaincy, 3 ODIs were also played in which the South African team defeated India 3–0. In that series, India failed in every field of cricket and after the bad defeat, the players of the team started getting question marks. Till then Team India looked so weak that they could not counterattack in any of the matches and were badly defeated by the African team.
Test series lost to England
The Indian team toured England in June-July 2022. Then the Indian team had a chance to win the series but the Indian bowling looked derailed and everyone bowed down in front of England batsman Johnny Bairstow. India lost this series too. Immediately after this T20 series was played between India vs South Africa which was captained by Rishabh Pant. India won the first two matches and the third match could not be played due to rain. The latter two matches were won by the African team and the series was levelled.
Zimbabwe-Ireland tour
Under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan, the Indian team toured Zimbabwe and Ireland and Indian young players saved India’s shame by winning both the series. During that time none of India’s star players were involved and only the youth team went on the tour under the captaincy of Dhawan. Then players like Shubman Gill, Ishaan Kishan showed a great game and won the match for India.
India’s defeat in Asia Cup
The Indian team arrived to play the Asia Cup adorned with star players and the first match was played against Pakistan. India won this match and also reached Super 8 but there Pakistan equalized and India got out of Asia Cup. The only achievement in this series was Virat Kohli coming back to form. Virat Kohli also scored his first T20 century against Afghanistan.
India reached the semi-finals of T20 World Cup
India’s name was at the top of the contenders for victory in the T20 World Cup and India got off to a great start on the back of Virat Kohli’s brilliant innings against Pakistan. Suryakumar Yadav emerged as a star in this tournament and did amazing batting. When the Indian team reached the semi-finals, it seemed that this team would win the match but England defeated India by 10 wickets in the semi-finals. The pair of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma flopped in the T20 World Cup. At the same time, India’s performance in bowling was also average. Only Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya were able to do something amazing for India in the World Cup.
Bangladesh won the ODI series
After the T20 World Cup, India toured New Zealand where rain played havoc with most of the matches and the T20 series was drawn while the ODI series was won by New Zealand. Immediately after this T20 and ODI series were played between India vs Bangladesh. India won the T20 but India lost the first ODI by scoring 306 runs. After this, the Indian batting faltered in the second ODI and the team lost that match as well. However, in the third ODI, India scored more than 400 runs and saved some face by winning the match by 212 runs. In this match, Ishaan Kishan made India win by scoring the fastest double century.
