Airtel Rolls Out AI-Powered Fraud Alert System to Combat OTP Banking Scams

The telecom major rolls out a real-time AI solution to detect and warn users against OTP fraud, starting with Haryana and expanding nationwide soon.

As digital fraud cases continue to rise across India, Bharti Airtel has introduced a new AI-powered fraud alert system aimed at protecting customers from OTP (one-time password)-related banking scams. The feature is designed to detect suspicious activity in real time and warn users before financial damage occurs.

The solution is currently live in Haryana and will be expanded nationwide over the next two weeks, according to the company.

How Airtel’s AI Fraud Alert System Works

Fraudsters often impersonate delivery agents, customer support executives, or service representatives to manipulate users into sharing OTPs linked to banking transactions. Once an OTP is revealed, scammers can gain unauthorised access to bank accounts and siphon off funds.

Airtel’s AI-backed system addresses this vulnerability by monitoring patterns during ongoing calls. If a banking OTP is detected during a potentially risky incoming call, the network instantly triggers a fraud alert. The warning notifies users that sharing OTPs related to financial transactions during the call could be unsafe.

By combining artificial intelligence with real-time network-level monitoring, Airtel aims to give customers a critical moment to pause, assess the situation, and avoid falling victim to scams — a security gap frequently exploited by cybercriminals.

Broader AI-Driven Security Push

Over the past two years, Airtel has introduced several AI-enabled security measures, including spam call detection and malicious link blocking, to curb fraud at an early stage.

According to data from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Airtel’s fraud detection solutions have already delivered measurable results. The system reportedly reduced the value of cybercrime-related financial losses on its network by nearly 68.7% last year. In addition, overall cybercrime incidents on the Airtel network declined by approximately 14.3% during the analysed period.

“Our newly developed AI-powered, autonomous solution operates proactively at the network level and is engineered to detect and intervene against fraudulent activity in real time. Extensive trials have demonstrated a remarkable level of accuracy and impact in preventing the menace of such scams,” said Shashwat Sharma, Managing Director & CEO, Airtel.

While fraudsters continue to rely on fake identities and psychological manipulation, Airtel’s latest AI-powered Fraud Alert system represents a significant step forward in strengthening user protection and enhancing digital security across its network.
