António Guterres Calls for Peace and Unity on Vesak Amid Global Tensions
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, extended a message of peace and unity on the occasion of Vesak, observed by millions of Buddhists worldwide. In his message, Guterres noted that Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautam Buddha—a figure whose teachings continue to inspire humanity across generations. Highlighting the current global climate, he stated that this year’s Vesak comes at a time marked by geopolitical tensions, division, and conflict across regions. “Guided by the Buddha’s example, let’s summon our shared humanity and build a more peaceful and sustainable world for all,” he said. His message underscores the enduring relevance of Buddha’s teachings—centered on compassion, non-violence, and harmony—especially in a world facing increasing uncertainty and fragmentation. As global leaders and communities reflect on Vesak, the call for unity and collective responsibility remains more significant than ever.
