Ashwini Vaishnaw Promises New Era for Kolkata Metro with 60 Modern Trains
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a major modernization drive for the Kolkata Metro network, revealing plans to induct 60 new-generation metro trains over the next four to five years.

Speaking during his visit to Kolkata, the Minister said the new fleet will transform urban mobility and significantly enhance passenger experience across the city's metro corridors.
"We are planning 60 new-generation trains for Kolkata Metro. In the coming four to five years, these trains will be inducted and Kolkata Metro will get a totally new generation of trains," Vaishnaw said.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly in the Chingrighata area and other key sections of the metro network.
According to him, the completion of these projects will lead to substantial improvements in connectivity, travel efficiency, and overall mobility across Kolkata.
The proposed modernization is expected to strengthen Kolkata Metro's position as one of India's most important urban transport systems. The introduction of advanced trains will bring improved safety features, enhanced passenger comfort, better energy efficiency, and increased operational reliability.
The announcement comes amid continued efforts by Indian Railways and Metro authorities to expand and modernize Kolkata's transportation infrastructure. Several metro expansion projects are currently underway, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing faster, more sustainable travel options for commuters.
Once completed, the new trains and infrastructure upgrades are expected to benefit millions of daily passengers while supporting the city's long-term urban development goals.
