Shreyas Iyer Replaces Suryakumar Yadav as India T20I Captain; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Makes History
Winds of change swept across India’s T20 International setup on Saturday as the BCCI Selection Committee announced a major structural reset. Star batter Shreyas Iyer has officially taken over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, who has been completely omitted from the T20I setup.
Concurrently, the cricketing world is buzzing with the inclusion of 15-year-old wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has found a place in the squad for the upcoming twin tours of Ireland and England. At just 15 years and 71 days old, Sooryavanshi becomes the youngest-ever player to feature in a senior Indian national cricket team squad, surpassing a long-standing record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
In stark contrast, the selection committee chose to move past Suryakumar Yadav despite his recent T20 World Cup triumph earlier this March. Middle-order mainstay Tilak Varma has been elevated to the role of vice-captain to serve as Shreyas’ deputy. Notable white-ball stars Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav have also missed out on this particular reset.
The Rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: Bettering the 'Little Master'
The undeniable focal point of public excitement is the maiden senior call-up for Bihar's batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. His selection became an easy decision for the selection panel following an unbelievable breakout IPL 2026 season where he captured the Orange Cap, plundering 776 runs including a century and five fifties at a staggering strike rate of 237.30.
Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar noted that Sooryavanshi's aggressive performances and elite temperament practically forced their hand, irrespective of his age.
By entering the squad at 15 years and 71 days, he shatters Sachin
Tendulkar's legendary benchmark. Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his international debut against Pakistan in Karachi back in 1989.
Team Composition & New Blood
The seam attack sees the inclusion of rookie fast bowler Prince Yadav, who turned heads with an exceptional domestic season for the Lucknow Super Giants, earning his first national call-up.
Speedster Harshit Rana also makes his highly anticipated return to the national bowling stable alongside veteran Arshdeep Singh and spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
