First curses to die and later does atonement
The tradition of cursing brother to die on Bhai Dooj is performed by people of a particular community in Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh. According to this tradition, on Bhai Dooj, sisters tell a lot of lies as soon as they wake up in the morning and even when this does not fill their mind, they also curse the brother to die. Later the sisters also atone for it in a unique way. For this she pricks her tongue with a thorn. This is part of a tradition. It is believed that by doing this, the brother’s age increases and happiness and prosperity remain in his life.
Know the belief behind the tradition
According to local legends, once Yamraj came to earth to take the life of a person whose sister had never said good or bad to him or had never cursed him. After a lot of searching, Yamraj found a man whose sister had never abused or cursed him. Yamraj started making plans to take that person’s life. When his sister came to know about this, she without any reason called her brother very good or bad and even cursed him to die. Due to this, Yamraj could not kill that person. According to this story, this unique tradition was prevalent.
