Christophe Galtier’s side  with a Round of 16 place in pocket. They were so impressive going forward on Tuesday night and if Messi, Mbappé and Neymar remain in this sort of mood, with this level of understanding between them, they are going to be mightily hard to stop. There is clearly still some work to do defensively, but Galtier has the nous and wherewithal to see that and deal with it. Paris are looking ominous.

Even though it was a big loss, it feels like Maccabi Haifa’s players really did their best. It was just too big of a night against the big three. Now the Greens will have to be at their best in their final group match, at home against Benfica, if they are to secure third place.

Messi and Mbappé got two apiece as Paris booked their place in the knockout stage in style. Neymar was also on target, while Sean Goldberg’s own goal and Carlos Soler’s helped Paris score seven for the first time in five seasons in the Champions League. Abdoulaye Seck twice headed in for the visitors, who suffered the heaviest ever loss for an Israeli club in the Champions League. They could yet pip Juventus for a Europa League spot, though.

Since his UEFA Champions League debut in 2004-05, Lionel Messi has scored more goals from outside the box than any other player in the competition (23, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo).

Lionel Messi has been named Player of the Match. UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel said: “Scored two fantastic goals and made two assists. He was a constant threat with his passing and dribbling.”

PSG matched their record for most goals in a Champions League game – also a 7-2 win, against Rosenborg in October 2000.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier said ,“The 4-3-3 system meant the front three could be a little higher up the pitch and they had a little more freedom in their movements thanks to the work of the midfield. It’s a privilege to have those players and to see them play like that, for each other.”
