CWG 2026: Dilip Gavit Wins Historic 100m T47 Gold

India created history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a sensational one-two finish in the Men's 100m T47 final. Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinched the gold medal in record-breaking fashion, while Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath added to India's celebrations by securing the silver medal.

The 23-year-old Gavit clocked 10.71 seconds, setting a new Commonwealth Games record despite challenging wet conditions at the track. Basil produced a season-best 10.83 seconds to finish second, while England's Kevin Santos claimed bronze in 10.85 seconds.

Running from Lane 7, Gavit displayed remarkable composure before producing a blistering burst over the final 30 metres to surge clear of the field and secure a memorable victory.

The triumph marked India's third gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, taking the nation's overall tally to 15 medals (3 Gold, 9 Silver and 3 Bronze).

A Story of Determination

Born in Toran Dongari village in Maharashtra's Nashik district, Gavit lost his right arm below the elbow following a childhood accident. Undeterred, he initially competed in able-bodied athletics before coach Vaijanth Kale identified his exceptional sprinting talent and guided him towards para athletics.

Since then, Gavit has emerged as one of India's brightest para athletes, winning the Men's 400m T47 gold at the 2022 Asian Para Games and reaching the final of the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

After his historic victory in Glasgow, Gavit dedicated the gold medal to his coach Vaijanth Kale, thanking him for recognising his talent and supporting his journey from a small village in Maharashtra to the top of the Commonwealth podium.
