CWG 2026: Sreeshankar Wins Historic Long Jump Silver

Murali Sreeshankar scripted history by winning the silver medal in the men's long jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026, becoming the first Indian athlete to claim back-to-back medals in the event.
Competing at Scotstoun Stadium, the 27-year-old registered a season-best jump of 8.09 metres, adding another Commonwealth silver to the medal he won at Birmingham 2022.

Sreeshankar made a strong start with an opening jump of 8.03m before improving to 8.09m on his second attempt, briefly taking the lead. However, former world champion Tajay Gayle of Jamaica produced a winning leap of 8.15m to secure the gold medal. Scotland's Stephen Mackenzie claimed bronze with 8.08m, finishing just one centimetre behind the Indian star.
Fellow Indian Lokesh Sathyanathan also impressed, finishing fifth with a best effort of 7.97m.

Men's Long Jump Results – CWG 2026

Gold: Tajay Gayle (Jamaica) – 8.15m

Silver: Murali Sreeshankar (India) – 8.09m

Bronze: Stephen Mackenzie (Scotland) – 8.08m

The silver medal marks a remarkable comeback for Sreeshankar, who suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in April 2024 that ruled him out of the Paris Olympics. Following surgery and months of rehabilitation under the guidance of his father and coach S. Murali, the Indian long jumper returned to the international stage in style.

With consecutive Commonwealth Games silver medals in 2022 and 2026, Sreeshankar has cemented his place in Indian athletics history. Before his achievements, India's Commonwealth Games long jump medallists included Suresh Babu (men's bronze, 1978), Anju Bobby George (women's bronze, 2002), and M. Prajusha (women's silver, 2010).
