Justice DY Chandrachud is going to be the new CJI of India. President Draupadi Murmu today appointed Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India in exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has tweeted this information. The formal swearing-in ceremony of Justice DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India will take place on November 9.
Justice U U Lalit will be replaced
Let us tell you that the tenure of the current CJI UU Lalit is going to end on November 8 next month. He will remain in this post for only 74 days. In view of this, the Central Government had written a letter to CJI Lalit to recommend the name of its superior officer. Responding to this, the CJI asked Justice Chandrachud to be his successor. Now after getting the President’s assent, Justice Chandrachud is going to become the CJI according to tradition. Significantly, it has been a tradition that the senior-most holds the post of CJI and Justice Chandrachud is the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court.
Tenure will last till 10 November 2024
Rijiju tweeted that Hon’ble President Murmu has appointed Justice DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November 2022. Justice Chandrachud will succeed Justice U U Lalit. Justice Chandrachud will become the 50th CJI and will assume office on November 9. Once appointed, his term will be till November 10, 2024.
Father was the 16th Chief Justice, held the post for the longest time
For the first time in the history of more than seven decades of the Supreme Court, the record of father-son becoming CJI is going to be recorded. Justice DY Chandrachud is the son of former Chief Justice of India YV Chandrachud. Justice YV Chandrachud has been the longest serving CJI. From 1978 to 1985, he served as the Chief Justice of India for seven years and four months. Justice Chandrachud has overturned his father’s decisions twice while being a judge of the Supreme Court. One of these cases is related to extramarital affairs and the other is related to the right to privacy.
