Bellingham Leads England Through in Mexico City Thriller

England kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 dream alive after edging co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a pulsating Round of 16 encounter at Mexico City Stadium. Inspired by a brilliant brace from Jude Bellingham and another goal from Harry Kane, the Three Lions survived relentless pressure and nearly 40 minutes with ten men to book a quarter-final clash against Norway.

The visitors weathered an early spell of Mexican dominance before striking twice in quick succession. Bellingham opened the scoring with a powerful header from Bukayo Saka's pinpoint cross before doubling England's lead moments later after Harry Kane capitalized on a Mexican turnover to provide the assist.

Mexico responded immediately as Julián Quiñones fired home from close range to ignite the home crowd. The co-hosts continued to threaten, but Jordan Pickford produced a sensational save to deny Raúl Jiménez before the break.

The second half brought even more drama. Nico O'Reilly rattled the post before England defender Jarell Quansah received a straight red card for a challenge on Jesús Gallardo, leaving Gareth Southgate's side to battle with ten men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, England extended their lead when Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel fouled Anthony Gordon inside the area. Kane calmly converted the resulting penalty to score his sixth goal of the tournament.

Mexico refused to surrender. Following a VAR review, England captain Kane was penalized for fouling Brian Gutiérrez in the box, and Jiménez converted from the spot to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd, Mexico threw everything forward in search of a dramatic equalizer, but England defended resolutely to secure a memorable victory and advance to the last eight.

Jude Bellingham's outstanding all-round display earned him the Player of the Match award.

After the match, Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre praised his players despite the heartbreaking defeat.

"I can't fault my team for anything. We did everything we could, and they're a great team. This is the top level—you can't make mistakes because they'll cost you dearly. We took a chance with our substitutions to take advantage of having an extra man, but we weren't able to do it. I have nothing but words of gratitude for everyone's support."

England will now face Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals on 11 July, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
