Robert Lewandowski has been named the Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2021, meaning the 33-year-old attacker has defended his title from last year. Lewandowski beat Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool to top spot.

Robert Lewandowski has been named the Best FIFA Men’s Player for the second year in a row. Captains and coaches of all national teams, fans and media representatives from around the world voted for the FC Bayern striker, who last season broke Gerd Müller’s single-season scoring record in the Bundesliga with 41 goals. He also became only the second player after Der Bomber to reach 300 goals in Germany’s top flight after his hat-trick at the weekend in the 4-0 win over 1. FC Cologne.

It is the crowning award and the logical result after an outstanding year for Lewandowski. In 2021, the Polish international broke two seemingly unsurpassable records set by Bayern legend Müller: In the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, Lewy scored an incredible 41 goals (Müller’s previous record was 40 goals in the 1971/72 season). In addition, FCB’s number 9 also set a new record with an incredible 43 Bundesliga goals in the 2021 calendar year (Müller’s record was previously 42 goals, in 1972). With a staggering 58 goals in all competitions for FCB in 2021, Lewandowski was by far the most successful goal scorer in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

FC Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn says ‘”Robert Lewandowski is a phenomenon. Once he’s reached one peak, he’s already thinking about the next. It is therefore more than justified that he’s won the honour of the Best FIFA Men’s Player for the second time in a row. We also would have liked to see Manuel Neuer win the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award again. Congratulations to Edouard Mendy, who also deserves this title. FC Bayern is proud and happy to have two such exceptional players and people in its ranks in Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer. One scores goals without end, the other stops them at the other end of the field. Both set standards on and off the pitch.”

“Thank you for all the support and congratulatory messages. I’m very happy to have won this award again. Winning it in back-to-back years means a lot to me, my teammates and the entire club,”Robert Lewandowski said.

Lewandowski further said ,”All of Gerd Müller’s records only help me to get better. If there’s a record that can be broken, then I want to try. Scoring 365 goals is a tough one to beat. It’s not something I’m thinking about. What matters more to me is what we achieve this season.”
