Speaking at the 62nd Munich Security Conference, Jaishankar said India has not forgotten Russia’s longstanding support, particularly during periods when India’s security and territorial integrity faced challenges.
“India and Russia have historically very good relations, particularly since the 1950s,” Jaishankar said, highlighting the legacy of India’s relationship with the Soviet Union and later Russia.
According to the External Affairs Minister, the bilateral relationship today is much broader and includes significant economic engagement alongside military, nuclear and space cooperation. He pointed to growing trade, investment and energy ties as important components of the relationship.
India’s Position on the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Jaishankar also reiterated India’s position on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, stressing that New Delhi wants to see an end to the fighting through dialogue and diplomacy.
He said India has moved beyond simply advocating negotiations and is now engaged in conversations with both Russia and Ukraine in an effort to contribute constructively to the process.
India, he noted, has been involved in discussions concerning the safety of shipping in the Black Sea, as well as issues related to grain exports, energy exports and possibilities for non-attack arrangements.
“We would like to see an end to this conflict. This will require dialogue and diplomacy,” Jaishankar said.
The External Affairs Minister emphasised that India’s engagement with both sides is aimed at being helpful and addressing immediate concerns while supporting diplomatic efforts to find a way forward.
Jaishankar’s remarks come as India continues to balance its longstanding strategic relationship with Russia with its broader engagement with Europe, the United States and other global partners.
