Indira Gandhi remembered by Congress on death anniversary
Indira Gandhi was remembered by senior Congress leaders in New Delhi on October 31, as the party marked the former prime minister's death anniversary. Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi offered flowers at her Shakti Sthal memorial.
The leaders also visited the Indira Gandhi Memorial on Safdarjung Road, her former residence, to pay homage. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy joined Congress representatives at Shakti Sthal, alongside party general secretary K.C. Venugopal.
In his tributes, Kharge praised her resolve and leadership, saying her contribution to India's development continued to inspire the party. His social media messages placed particular emphasis on her commitment to the country's unity and integrity.
Leaders recall policies and personal memories
Revanth Reddy referred to Indira Gandhi's economic and social initiatives in a separate statement. He highlighted bank nationalisation, the removal of privy purses and the 20-Point Programme among the measures associated with her governance.
According to Reddy, those policies sought to extend development to poorer and marginalised communities. He said financial security for ordinary citizens and their participation in development were central to that approach.
The Telangana chief minister also linked his government's focus on welfare and social justice to her principles. He described her as a decisive leader who put national interests ahead of her own political position during difficult periods.
Rahul Gandhi shared a personal recollection of learning a Sanskrit shloka from his grandmother, remembering how he repeated its words after her. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid tribute, recalling her grandmother's resilience and spirit.
Born on November 19, 1917, Gandhi became India's first woman prime minister. She was assassinated by her bodyguards in New Delhi on October 31, 1984; the anniversary tributes recalled both her public career and her place in the family's memories.
