Jaishankar Calls for Greater Global South Solidarity

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has called for stronger solidarity among Global South countries, warning that developing nations are facing the impact of multiple global crises while remaining underrepresented in international decision-making.

Speaking at the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries and Friends on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Jaishankar said the world is experiencing considerable uncertainty marked by conflicts, geopolitical tensions, supply-chain disruptions, rising trade barriers, fragmented investment flows and climate shocks.

Jaishankar also highlighted growing pressure on international law and multilateral institutions.

He argued that institutions created in an earlier era continue to reflect the power structures of that period, leaving the Global South exposed to global crises while having limited representation in decision-making.

“The Global South today may be in the front row of the global crisis, but is in the back row of decision-making,” Jaishankar said.

The External Affairs Minister said the increase in active conflicts over the past year poses significant risks to the global economy, particularly for developing countries. He also expressed concern that multilateralism has come under pressure at a time when greater international cooperation is needed.

Jaishankar called for greater cooperation among Global South countries on issues including supply-chain resilience, energy security, food security, fair trade, industrialisation, maritime security, artificial intelligence and climate-related challenges. He also stressed the need for Global South countries to have a greater role in decision-making structures dealing with issues that directly affect their future.

The meeting reinforced India's emphasis on South-South cooperation and reformed multilateralism, with Jaishankar saying that solidarity among Global South countries has become particularly important amid the changing global landscape.
