Kolkata Metro TBM Durga Breakthrough Boosts Purple Line

Kolkata Metro has reached a major construction milestone with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 'Durga' on the Purple Line of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor. The breakthrough marks the completion of one of the underground tunnel drives between Khidderpore and Victoria, bringing the ambitious metro expansion project a significant step closer to completion.

The successful tunnelling operation highlights the engineering expertise, meticulous planning, and close coordination among project teams involved in constructing one of Kolkata's most complex underground metro sections.

The breakthrough is expected to accelerate the development of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing Kolkata's urban transport network. Once operational, the corridor will provide faster and more efficient connectivity between the southern parts of the city and Kolkata's central business district.

The Purple Line is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve daily commuting, and support sustainable urban mobility by offering a reliable mass transit alternative for thousands of passengers.

Officials described the breakthrough as another major achievement in Kolkata Metro's ongoing expansion, reinforcing the city's commitment to developing world-class public transport infrastructure.
