Maria Sharapova announces birth of first child Theodore

by Kolkata Today

Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, has announced the birth of her first child, a boy named Theodore on Friday, sharing a picture of the newborn along with her fiance.

“The most beautiful, challenging, and rewarding gift our little family could ask for,” Sharapova, who is engaged to British businessman Alexander Gilkes, said in a post on Instagram.

Sharapova retired from professional tennis in February of 2020 with a career that included 36 career singles titles on the Hologic WTA Tour. She spent 21 weeks at the top of the WTA Tour singles rankings.

Sharapova is the most player on tour to complete the Career Grand Slam. She is a two-time Roland Garros champion and has won each of the other major events once (the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open).

Although she competed under the Russian flag during her career – and is the only Russian woman to have won a career Grand Slam – Sharapova has lived in the United States.
