Kiren Rijiju: “Monsoon Session Very Successful in Business, But Not in Debate and Discussion”

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Monsoon Session concluded on Thursday with a mixed outcome, describing it as successful in terms of legislative business but less productive in terms of debate and discussion.

Rijiju said Parliament passed a total of 12 bills during the session. However, he highlighted the impact of disruptions and walkouts on overall productivity.

According to the Union Minister, the Lok Sabha recorded 19% productivity compared with the total time allotted, while productivity in the Rajya Sabha stood at 39%.

Rijiju said opposition parties frequently created disruptions and, on some occasions, staged walkouts. At the same time, he noted that NDA members and MPs from some opposition parties participated in debates and discussions.

Public Examinations Bill Discussed in Both Houses

Rijiju also highlighted the legislation dealing with paper leaks and unfair practices in examinations. He said the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act was passed during the session.
According to Rijiju, this was the only bill in the Lok Sabha that underwent a full discussion during the session. He added that the legislation was discussed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
The minister's remarks came as the Monsoon Session concluded, with the government emphasizing the number of bills passed while acknowledging the disruption that limited parliamentary debate and discussion.
