Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the historic town of Kalna in West Bengal, where she engaged with local handloom weavers and artisans. During the interaction, she shared insights on various central government initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s handloom and handicraft sector and encouraged artisans to actively benefit from these schemes.
Kalna, renowned for its exquisite Jamdani weaving tradition, is globally celebrated for its intricate patterns, fine craftsmanship, and deep cultural heritage. The Jamdani weaving tradition is also recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The Finance Minister’s visit underscored the government’s continued focus on empowering traditional artisans, enhancing market access, and promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities in the handloom sector.
