Pakistan Election Results 2024: Shehbaz Sharif wins Lahore

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has won National and Provincial Assembly seats in Lahore, as reported by the media in the neighbouring country, citing the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Voting concluded in Pakistan for parliamentary elections on February 8 at 5 pm amidst escalating militant attacks and allegations of electoral misconduct. The disturbances raised concerns about the integrity of the vote count and the likelihood of a coalition government formation due to deep political divisions. Pakistan suspended mobile phone services across the nation on Thursday citing the need to preserve order amidst anticipated unrest surrounding the hostile situation prevailing around the polls.

Notable Delay In Vote Count After Elections Prompts Warning From Election Commission

Pakistan experienced notable delays in the vote count after the elections, prompting the country’s election commission to issue a late-night warning to polling officers, urging them to promptly release results. Pakistan’s political landscape is predominantly shaped by three major parties: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf, and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Following the election results, the newly-elected parliament will select a prime minister. If no single party secures a majority, the party with the largest portion of assembly seats will form a coalition government.

Notably, the incoming government is going to face formidable challenges, including managing internal unrest, addressing a severe economic crisis, and tackling illegal migration, all of which are burning issues in Pakistan reported extensively in the media.

Inflation is at an all-time high, at nearly 30 per cent, with the rupee plummeting for the past three years, and a significant balance of payments deficit has led to a halt in imports. The economic situation has significantly hindered industrial expansion in the country.

Nawaz Sharif Set To Deliver “Victory Speech”

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Friday said its leader Nawaz Sharif is set to deliver a “victory speech” after the final results of the general elections. It also stated that it is in contact with the independent candidates backed by jailed former premier Imran Khan’s party.
