PM Modi Calls for Atmanirbhar Bharat, Highlights India’s Semiconductor Push

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasised the importance of building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, calling self-reliance crucial for India’s growth, security and long-term interests.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, Modi said India must reduce its dependence on other nations, strengthen its own capabilities and safeguard its interests through domestic capacity-building.

The Prime Minister said the vision of self-reliance is being driven through initiatives and campaigns such as Make in India, Swadeshi and Local for Local, with citizens increasingly connecting with the idea of producing and using Indian-made products.

Focus on Semiconductor Self-Reliance

Modi also highlighted the strategic importance of semiconductors in today’s digital and technology-driven world. He said chips are essential across sectors including electronics, medical equipment and transportation, making semiconductor manufacturing a critical component of national self-reliance.

The Prime Minister said India has taken significant steps towards becoming self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing, with three major semiconductor plants already established and production underway for exports.

He further said that five to eight additional semiconductor plants are expected to commence operations in the coming years, strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

The push for domestic chip manufacturing is part of India’s broader strategy to build resilient supply chains, expand high-tech manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports in strategically important sectors.

Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision

Modi said India is moving firmly towards the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat, combining domestic manufacturing, technological capabilities and innovation with the broader vision of a developed India.
The semiconductor push, he said, represents an important step in ensuring that India develops the capabilities needed to participate more strongly in the global technology economy.
