R Praggnanandhaa Scripts History, Becomes First Indian to Win Norway Chess Title

Indian chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa has described his historic Norway Chess 2026 triumph as the biggest achievement of his career, highlighting the significance of overcoming some of the world's strongest grandmasters, including legendary World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

Speaking after securing the prestigious title, Praggnanandhaa said the victory was particularly special because of the exceptional strength of the tournament field.

Norway Chess 2026 featured one of the highest average player ratings ever assembled in a chess competition, making the achievement even more remarkable.

The 20-year-old Indian star created history by becoming the first player from India to win the Norway Chess title since the tournament was established in 2013. His campaign was highlighted by two victories over seven-time Norway Chess champion Magnus Carlsen — a rare accomplishment against one of the greatest players in chess history.

Praggnanandhaa's consistent performances throughout the tournament helped him edge out an elite field featuring several of the world's top-ranked players. The landmark triumph further cements his status as one of the brightest stars in global chess and marks another significant milestone for Indian chess on the international stage.

The victory is expected to inspire a new generation of Indian chess players as the country continues to emerge as a global powerhouse in the sport.
