Alexia Putellas’ rise to the pinnacle of her profession has been hugely impressive, and she emerged as a popular and convincing winner of this latest honour. But despite all her achievements, and the hard work that has underpinned each of them, the Spain star admitted to being taken aback to see herself scaling such heights.
“I never imagined I’d reach this level,” she said. “But when you put in the work and people have faith in you, the results come. That’s how it has been for me. We won pretty much everything last season and hopefully we’ll do that again this year.
“I’m not sure 2021 has really sunk in for me yet, nor have the last few months really. But I’m just going to carry on and hopefully even more success will come.”

The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony also recognised two outstanding performances on the international stage, where landmark goalscoring records have been broken. Christine Sinclair, with 188 goals in 308 caps for Canada, received The Best FIFA Special Award for women’s football, and Cristiano Ronaldo, with 115 goals in 184 appearances for Portugal, received The Best FIFA Special Award for men’s football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the awards to Christine Sinclair (virtual) and Cristiano Ronaldo (in person) during The Best FIFA Football Awards 2021 ceremony at the Home of FIFA in Zurich.
,“I think It’s much harder to score goals at international level these days,” said Ronaldo in 1997. “You can’t expect to score against Saudi Arabia or Australia or any other national team in the modern era. That record is not something I think about,”Cristiano Ronaldo added.
