Roland-Garros Cinderella Story: Chwalinska Advances to Maiden Grand Slam Semifinal

Maja Chwalinska's remarkable Roland-Garros 2026 journey continued on Wednesday as the Polish qualifier defeated No.22 seed Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(3), 6-3 on Court Philippe-Chatrier to book her place in the semifinals of the French Open.

The victory sees the world No.114 equal the best result achieved by a women's singles qualifier at Roland-Garros in the Open Era, matching Nadia Podoroska's semifinal run in 2020. It marks an extraordinary breakthrough for the 24-year-old, who entered the tournament with just one Grand Slam main-draw win and only two career tour-level victories on clay.

Earlier in the tournament, Chwalinska joked during an on-court interview that "nobody knows me." Three weeks later, she has become one of the biggest stories in Paris. Her latest triumph extends an incredible streak of eight consecutive wins, including three qualifying matches and five main-draw victories.

Despite the growing spotlight, Chwalinska remains grounded. After defeating Kalinskaya, she admitted she was still trying to process her stunning achievement.

"I honestly don't know what is going on," she said. "Every single match here is kind of crazy for me. I'm very grateful."

The Pole showcased impressive composure after surrendering an early break in the opening set, responding with aggressive and confident shot-making to seize control of the match. Her resilience and fearless approach have been hallmarks of her tournament run.

Chwalinska will now face Diana Shnaider in the semifinals after the Russian stunned world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka earlier on Wednesday. The matchup promises another major test for the qualifier, who has already exceeded expectations in Paris.

Having previously failed to qualify for Roland-Garros in 2021, 2023, and 2025, Chwalinska's rise to the final four represents one of the most inspiring stories of the 2026 tournament and a breakthrough moment in her young career.
