Manchester United bounced back from two opening Premier League defeats with an excellent 2-1 win against rivals Liverpool.
Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were on target as Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United clinched their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Erik ten Hag is the first Manchester United manager to secure his first ever competitive win with the club in a match against Liverpool.
The hosts, who had not beaten Liverpool since March 2018, got off to a superb start and might have scored in the fifth minute when Anthony Elanga hit the far post with a curling shot.
Liverpool’s first Premier League defeat of 2022, stretching back 21 matches.
But Sancho’s composed 16th-minute strike set Erik ten Hag’s side on their way and when Rashford doubled their lead early on in the second half it was no less than they deserved.
Liverpool did give themselves a fighting chance late on in the contest when Mohamed Salah converted a close-range header nine minutes from time.
But United, who had lost their first two matches of the season, held on for a win that takes them up to 14th place.
Liverpool, who are still without a win this season, drop to 16th.
Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson said,”It’s been a really poor start to the season – we’re giving every team a goal start, and you can’t keep going behind. They wanted something to lift the crowd and the team and we gave it to them. Two points from nine is not the start that we wanted and we need to pick the performances up individually and collectively”
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said ,”United were really aggressive in the beginning, which was clear but reality shows if you’re really ready but they were more ready than us and they scored. We controlled the game and passed the ball around the box but we conceded a second goal. It’s definitely not the result we wanted”
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said ,
“Today was really important for us. We showed the right intensity and more importantly the right character, and we got the three points. Scoring first was really important for us, for our confidence. It was important for us to take the first step in the league; now we have to carry on”
After the match Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag said,”We can talk about tactics but it is all about attitude. There was communication and a fighting spirit. I wanted a different approach and a different attitude and that is what they brought on the pitch. It is only a start. We can play with much more composure and much more danger. Be a team, and have a good spirit and that is what we saw today”
