Sunil Bharti Mittal Flags US Trade Uncertainty, Backs India Investment
Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal has highlighted India's growing potential to attract global investment, citing stronger economic ties with Gulf nations and Singapore, along with a new wave of bilateral trade agreements. However, he warned that uncertainty surrounding India-US trade relations and higher tariffs remains a concern.
India Strengthens Investment Ties With Gulf Nations
Mittal said India has become an attractive destination for international investment, particularly from countries with substantial capital to deploy overseas.
He pointed to the growing economic relationships between India and Singapore, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, describing these partnerships as mutually beneficial.
According to Mittal, these relationships are helping strengthen investment flows and economic cooperation between India and its international partners.
Trade Agreements Could Boost India's Global Trade
Mittal also highlighted India's expanding network of bilateral trade agreements, which he said is helping the country improve its position in global trade.
He referred to agreements with New Zealand and Australia, as well as the India-UK trade deal, which he said had recently come into effect. He added that negotiations with Europe were approaching a signing stage, while discussions with Canada had advanced considerably.
These trade agreements could create further opportunities for Indian businesses, strengthen international partnerships and support investment across sectors.
US Trade Uncertainty Remains a Concern
Despite the positive outlook, Mittal identified India-US trade relations as a key area of uncertainty. He described the United States as India's largest trading partner and said the relationship remained a work in progress.
Mittal pointed to more than $100 billion in trade flowing from India to the US, warning that higher tariffs and uncertainty over future trade arrangements could create challenges.
He indicated that clarity on tariffs and the future direction of bilateral trade would be important for businesses and investors.
India Looks to Expand Global Economic Partnerships
Mittal's remarks underline the importance of diversifying India's trade relationships while strengthening established partnerships. With several trade agreements progressing, India has opportunities to attract overseas capital and expand its access to international markets.
However, the future of India-US trade relations remains an important factor in determining how businesses navigate tariffs, investment decisions and cross-border commerce.
