Suvendu Adhikari Targets Congress Over Vande Mataram Row

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has criticised the Congress party over an alleged incident involving the disrespect of ‘Vande Mataram’ during its Independence Day programme at the party headquarters.

Adhikari said the national song is deeply connected with India’s nationalism, patriotism and national identity. He questioned the Congress over its conduct while ‘Vande Mataram’ was being sung, saying the issue had gained further significance following a letter from the family of renowned Bengali author Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who penned the iconic song.

According to Adhikari, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s family wrote to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, expressing their objection and seeking an apology over the alleged incident.

“Yesterday was Independence Day, and the manner in which the Congress party disrespected ‘Vande Mataram’ while it was being sung at the party headquarters has come to light,” Adhikari said.

He added that there has so far been no response or explanation from Sonia Gandhi or the Congress party regarding the letter.

The remarks have added a political dimension to the controversy surrounding ‘Vande Mataram’, a song that has played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle and continues to hold strong emotional and historical significance across the country.
