US President Donald Trump has announced that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her role at the end of August to spend more time with her young children and family.

Trump praised Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides and said he understood and respected her decision to prioritise her family. He also said she would continue to serve as one of his top outside advisers and remain an influential voice within the Republican Party.

Leavitt, 28, made history as the youngest person to serve as White House press secretary. She was appointed to the high-profile position at 27 and became a prominent face of the Trump administration's communications strategy.

Her departure comes shortly after she returned from maternity leave following the birth of her second child, a daughter named Viviana, in May. Leavitt and her husband also have a young son.

Trump has not yet announced who will succeed Leavitt as White House press secretary.
