Independence Day Celebrations: West Bengal Invites Delegates From Five States

Independence Day Celebrations in West Bengal will this year feature a wider national participation, with representatives from five other states or Union Territories expected to be invited to the state's programmes. The initiative is part of a series of guidelines issued for August 15 celebrations across the country.

The Centre has directed chief secretaries of all states to organise a range of programmes marking Independence Day and to promote greater interaction among people from different parts of the country.

Five States to Be Invited for Independence Day Events

According to instructions issued by the Centre, every state and Union Territory will invite representatives from five other states or Union Territories to participate in Independence Day programmes.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and cultural ties among people from different regions.

In West Bengal, however, the names of the five states whose representatives will participate in the main celebrations in Kolkata have not yet been finalised.

Cultural and Food Festivals

As part of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative, states have also been asked to organise cultural and food festivals.

The programmes are intended to showcase the country's diverse traditions, cuisines and cultural heritage while creating opportunities for people from different states to interact with one another.

Independence Day Programmes Across West Bengal
The guidelines provide a detailed framework for organising Independence Day events at different administrative levels.

Programmes at the state, district, subdivision, block, Gram Panchayat and village levels have been directed to begin after 9 am.

At the state level, the Chief Minister will hoist the national flag. At the district level, the flag will be hoisted by a minister, commissioner or district magistrate.

At the subdivision and block levels, the responsibility will rest with the concerned officials, while Gram Panchayat and village-level ceremonies will be led by the respective panchayat or village heads.

Cleanliness Drive Under Swachh Bharat Initiative

The Independence Day programme will also include a major cleanliness campaign under the Swachh Bharat initiative.

Authorities have been instructed to identify important locations across districts and the state and conduct cleanliness activities over a period of one month.

Students and Youth Groups to Participate

Schools, NSS volunteers, NCC members, youth organisations and social organisations will be encouraged to participate in the cleanliness campaign.

The guidelines also place emphasis on tree plantation drives, linking the Independence Day celebrations with environmental awareness and community participation.

'At Home' Programme at Raj Bhavan

Another key component of the Independence Day celebrations will be an 'At Home' programme at the residence of the Governor or Lieutenant Governor.

The event is scheduled to be organised after 6 pm on August 15.

Apart from regular invitees, the programme will include people who have made notable contributions in different fields.

Persons with disabilities
Achievers from different fields
Environmental conservationists
Sanitation workers
Padma Award recipients
Families of martyrs
Olympic and other major sporting event medal winners
Teachers
Healthcare workers
Children who have received bravery awards
Women Sarpanches
Students
Researchers involved in innovative work
Authorities have been advised to reserve seats for around 25 to 50 special guests representing these categories.

Band Performances at 343 Locations

To strengthen patriotic sentiment among citizens, band performances will also be organised at important locations across the country.

According to the guidelines, around 343 significant locations have been identified for such performances.

Local administrations have been instructed to provide the necessary support to ensure that these events are conducted successfully.

Focus on National Unity

The expanded format of the Independence Day Celebrations reflects an effort to combine traditional flag-hoisting ceremonies with cultural exchange, public participation, cleanliness initiatives and recognition of people who have contributed to society.

The participation of representatives from five other states or Union Territories is expected to give the celebrations a broader national character.
