Ukraine refinery strikes paused amid US pressure, reports say
Ukraine refinery strikes have been put on hold following pressure from US President Donald Trump, according to reports citing people familiar with the operations. Kyiv has made no public announcement of a suspension.
The unofficial break reportedly began early last week, during a period of tension between Washington and Kyiv. People familiar with the matter said it could continue until after the US midterm elections and possibly further into November.
Two military officials said long-range units received instructions in mid-October to finish operations already in progress before holding back from further refinery missions. The account describes an operational pause rather than a publicly agreed settlement.
Kyiv seeks protection for energy facilities
President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukraine wants stronger protection for its own energy network in return for restraint. Russia has continued missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian energy facilities and cities ahead of winter, according to reports.
Zelensky told reporters on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had exercised greater caution during the diplomatic tensions but had received no prohibition on attacking refineries. He also said drone units were currently targeting other facilities inside Russia.
The reported pause in Ukraine refinery strikes comes as Trump presses for lower fuel prices. He has argued that attacks on Russian energy installations contribute to rising costs, an issue facing American voters before the congressional elections.
On October 9, Trump announced an arrangement for Russia to supply more than 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel immediately, with additional deliveries expected. Washington also temporarily relaxed restrictions affecting Russian fuel exports.
Zelensky criticised that decision, arguing that additional energy earnings would support Russia's war effort. Some US lawmakers likewise called for stronger economic pressure on Moscow. Ukraine has used its long-range energy campaign to disrupt Russian military fuel supplies and reduce revenues available for the war.
