Daniil Medvedev, who won the 2021 US Open by ending Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam hopes, opened his campaign as defending champion by winning comfortably against an uncomfortable opponent, the American Stefan Kozlov, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0.
Medvedev struck 10 aces and 34 winners to claim victory in two hours.
Medvedev, now riding an eight-match win streak at the US Open, is looking to become the first man to successfully defend his title here since Roger Federer back in 2008.
Though Kozlov has had much less experience and success on the pro tour, he and Medvedev first played each other when they were 12 and 14, respectively. “In juniors he was impossible to beat,” Medvedev said after the match. “He destroyed me.”“I was happy to get my revenge today,” he added.
