West Bengal Fisheries Development: Suvendu Adhikari and Rajiv Ranjan Singh Review Fisheries and Aquaculture Roadmap

West Bengal Fisheries Development received fresh attention as West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari and Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh co-chaired a high-level review meeting in Kolkata on September 21, 2026. The meeting focused on strengthening fisheries and aquaculture in the state and identifying a roadmap for sustainable growth of the sector.

The review meeting, organised by the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, brought together key stakeholders to assess ongoing schemes and programmes and discuss measures aimed at increasing fish production, expanding aquaculture, improving infrastructure and strengthening market linkages.

West Bengal Fisheries Development Gets Policy Focus

The latest West Bengal Fisheries Development review comes after more than a decade since an apex-level fisheries review meeting of this nature was held in the state, according to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. The objective is to make better use of West Bengal's fisheries potential while supporting sustainable and inclusive growth across the sector.

The discussions covered several important areas, including production enhancement, aquaculture expansion, adoption of modern technologies, infrastructure development and investment opportunities.

The meeting also focused on strengthening the fisheries value chain, which includes production, post-harvest management, processing and access to markets.

Focus on Fish Production and Modern Aquaculture

A major component of the West Bengal Fisheries Development roadmap is increasing fish production and productivity. The state has significant inland and coastal fisheries resources, providing opportunities for further development of both traditional fisheries and modern aquaculture.

Modern technology can play an important role in improving productivity, reducing losses and making aquaculture more efficient. The review meeting therefore examined technology adoption and the expansion of aquaculture as key areas for future intervention.

Infrastructure development was another important part of the discussions. Better facilities for handling, storage, processing and transportation can strengthen the fisheries value chain and help producers connect more efficiently with markets.
