Alexander Zverev Wins First Grand Slam Title at Roland-Garros, Defeats Flavio Cobolli in Thrilling Final
Alexander Zverev finally achieved the crowning moment of his career on Sunday, lifting his maiden Grand Slam trophy after defeating Italy's Flavio Cobolli in a gripping five-set Roland-Garros final.
The German star overcame years of heartbreak and near misses to secure a memorable 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 victory on Court Philippe-Chatrier, ending a long wait for a major championship.
Widely regarded as one of the best players never to win a Grand Slam, Zverev entered the final carrying the weight of three previous major final defeats. However, the 29-year-old finally broke through, showcasing resilience and composure in a contest that lasted more than four hours.
The victory makes Zverev the first German man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Boris Becker's Australian Open triumph three decades ago. It also came on his 125th Grand Slam match victory, the most wins recorded by any player before capturing their first major title.
Cobolli, the tournament's 10th seed and one of the rising stars of men's tennis, pushed Zverev to the limit. The Italian fought back after losing the opening set and dramatically claimed the fourth-set tiebreak despite trailing 3-1. Yet Zverev responded emphatically in the deciding set, dominating proceedings to seal the biggest victory of his career.
With defending champions and recent major winners Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz eliminated before the latter stages, and Novak Djokovic also out of contention, Zverev entered the tournament as one of the leading favorites. On the biggest day of his career, he delivered.
The Roland-Garros crown not only ends Zverev's Grand Slam drought but also firmly establishes him among the sport's elite champions, completing a journey that has taken years of perseverance, setbacks, and determination.
