Belgian PM Bart De Wever Calls India Europe’s ‘Number One’ Partner
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has strongly highlighted India’s importance as a strategic partner for Europe, describing the country as a key candidate for deeper cooperation based on mutual respect and multilateralism.
Speaking about the European Union’s search for reliable partners around the world, De Wever said European leaders are increasingly discussing which countries share their commitment to multilateralism and cooperation without coercion.
“If India is not on that list, then you have missed something very fundamental. India is on that list. It’s number one,” De Wever said.
The Belgian Prime Minister also described India as a large and fast-growing economy with a vast pool of talent, underlining the immense potential for a mutually beneficial partnership between India and Europe.
His remarks underscore the growing strategic and economic significance of India-EU relations, particularly as Europe seeks to strengthen partnerships with major economies that can contribute to trade, investment, technology, talent and long-term economic growth.
De Wever’s comments also reflect the broader push for stronger India-Europe engagement based on shared interests, respect and cooperation in a rapidly changing global environment.
