Bhawanipur Showdown: Mamata Faces Suvendu in High-Stakes 2026 Battle

The political heat in West Bengal has intensified following the All India Trinamool Congress’s (AITC) announcement of its candidate roster for the 294-seat Assembly. While the party will contest 291 seats, leaving three for ally Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), all eyes are on the high-stakes Bhawanipur constituency. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will seek re-election from her home turf, facing a direct challenge from Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Bhawanipur’s contest evokes memories of the 2021 Nandigram showdown, when Banerjee left her stronghold to challenge Adhikari on his home ground. The result was one of the tightest in the state’s political history, with Adhikari narrowly winning by just 1,956 votes (1,10,764 to 1,08,808).

For 2026, both parties have recalibrated their strategies:

Mamata Banerjee’s return to Bhawanipur signals an effort to consolidate her core support.

The BJP has fielded Adhikari in both Nandigram and Bhawanipur, aiming to challenge the TMC leadership directly in Kolkata while retaining a stronghold in the coastal belt.

To reclaim Nandigram, the TMC has nominated Pabitra Kar, a former BJP leader and local panchayat chief recently rejoined to the party—a tactical bid to leverage local knowledge and networks.

BJP leaders project confidence that Adhikari can replicate his 2021 success and topple the TMC supremo in her bastion. Meanwhile, Banerjee remains optimistic, targeting 226+ seats, banking on her party’s organizational depth to withstand the dual-front challenge.

With polls set in two phases—April 23 and April 29—and counting scheduled for May 4, Bhawanipur is shaping up as the definitive barometer of West Bengal’s political climate in 2026.
