Mark Carney Says Canada Will Match Trump’s Tariffs Dollar for Dollar
Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on imports of U.S. steel, electronics and other products starting September 8, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday, after negotiations with Washington failed to produce a new trade agreement.

Carney said the measures are a direct response to President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs, which took effect at midnight. Canada will match the new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar, he said, to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.

The decision follows days of intense negotiations between the two longtime trade partners and allies. The failure to reach an agreement has further strained bilateral relations and raised fresh uncertainty over the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The latest tariff escalation could have significant implications for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, while increasing pressure on Ottawa and Washington to resolve their trade dispute.
Carney said Canada remains committed to protecting its economic interests as the two countries navigate the latest breakdown in trade talks.
