India suffered a 1–3 defeat against co-hosts Netherlands in a high-stakes Pool E Round 2 encounter at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.

The Indian Men’s Hockey Team produced a disciplined defensive display and created several opportunities, but the Netherlands proved more clinical in the attacking circle on home turf.

India began the match with an aggressive full press and looked to disrupt the Dutch build-up. Sumit and Sanjay made crucial defensive interventions to prevent the Netherlands from converting early penalty-corner opportunities, with the teams remaining goalless at half-time.

The Netherlands finally broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Duco Telgenkamp capitalised on a defensive lapse. Tjep Hoedemakers then doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 51st minute with a quick deflection.

India responded almost immediately, with captain Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty-corner drag-flick to make it 2–1 and give the Men in Blue renewed hope.

However, India's push for an equaliser left space at the back, and Thijs van Dam punished the visitors with a late counter-attack goal to seal a 3–1 victory for the Netherlands.

The defeat leaves India with little room for error in Pool E, but their World Cup campaign remains alive. The Indian team will now turn its attention to a crucial clash against Argentina on Monday.
