Canada-US Trade Talks Collapse as Washington Threatens 50% Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney amid escalating US-Canada trade tensions and tariff negotiations

Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after the two countries failed to reach a deal ahead of a Friday deadline, escalating trade tensions between the long-standing North American allies.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the negotiations had made “important progress” but ultimately failed to achieve Canada’s objectives. He said the United States was preparing to impose 50% tariffs on around $28 billion worth of Canadian goods.

Ottawa has warned that it could respond with reciprocal “dollar for dollar” tariffs if the new US measures come into effect.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, however, said Canada had walked away from the negotiations, highlighting the growing divide between the two sides.

The new US tariffs are expected to take effect at midnight, potentially placing additional pressure on cross-border trade and businesses in both countries.

The breakdown in negotiations marks a fresh escalation in trade tensions between Canada and the United States, with the prospect of retaliatory tariffs raising concerns over the economic impact on industries and consumers on both sides of the border.
