West Bengal Helplines: Four Toll-Free Numbers for Complaints
KT- Amit Shah

West Bengal Helplines have been launched by the state government to enable people to directly report complaints related to extortion, syndicate activities, illegal road and toll tax collection, and illegal liquor.

The announcement was made following a meeting in Siliguri between Union Home Minister Amit Shah, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and senior government officials.

Four West Bengal Helplines for Public Complaints

The West Bengal government has introduced four dedicated toll-free numbers for people to register complaints. The helplines cover specific issues that can affect residents and businesses across the state.

The numbers are:
Extortion: 155334
Syndicate: 155335
Illegal Road/Toll Tax: 155337
Illegal Liquor: 155339

The government has said that citizens can use these numbers to directly report problems and seek administrative intervention.

Helplines Aim to Strengthen Public Grievance Redressal

The introduction of the West Bengal helplines is aimed at creating a direct channel between citizens and the administration. Instead of depending solely on local-level mechanisms, people will be able to register complaints through the dedicated toll-free numbers.

According to the announcement, authorities will take prompt action on complaints received through the helplines. The initiative is expected to help the administration identify complaints related to unlawful activities and take appropriate steps based on the information provided.

The government has also emphasised the importance of ensuring that people can raise concerns without facing unnecessary difficulties.

Focus on Extortion and Syndicate Activities

Among the key areas covered by the new system are extortion and syndicate-related complaints. These issues have frequently featured in political and administrative debates in West Bengal.

The dedicated numbers are expected to provide residents with a mechanism to report alleged extortion demands or syndicate activities directly to the authorities.

The government has stated that swift action will be ensured after complaints are received and examined by the relevant authorities.

Illegal Road and Toll Tax Complaints

Another dedicated helpline has been created for complaints concerning illegal road or toll tax collection.

Citizens who believe that they have been subjected to unauthorised road or toll charges can use 155337 to register their complaints. The administration will then examine the allegations and take action where necessary.

The move is expected to improve monitoring of road-related collections and strengthen accountability.

Helpline for Illegal Liquor Complaints

The fourth dedicated number, 155339, will deal with complaints regarding illegal liquor activities.

West Bengal authorities have said that the public can use this number to report information concerning suspected illegal liquor-related activities. The initiative is intended to assist enforcement agencies in identifying and acting against unlawful operations.

Government Promises Swift Action

The state government has stressed that simply registering complaints will not be enough and that effective follow-up action is necessary.

According to the announcement, every complaint received through the four helplines will be acted upon promptly. The administration is expected to verify complaints and coordinate with the appropriate departments and enforcement agencies.

The effectiveness of the initiative will ultimately depend on how quickly complaints are processed and how transparently action is taken.

Aims to Make Bengal Free From Extortion
The government has positioned the new West Bengal helplines as an important measure to protect citizens from extortion and other alleged illegal activities.
The administration has said the initiative will help free people from the clutches of extortion and provide them with a more accessible avenue for raising grievances.

The four-number system also allows complaints to be directed towards specific categories, potentially making it easier for authorities to identify the nature of a complaint and assign it to the relevant agency.

What Citizens Should Know

People using the helplines should provide accurate information about their complaint so that authorities can properly examine the matter. Details regarding the nature of the alleged activity and the location involved may help officials assess complaints more efficiently.

The government is expected to monitor the functioning of the helplines as part of its broader administrative and law-enforcement efforts.

The launch of these dedicated numbers marks an attempt to strengthen direct public participation in grievance reporting while improving the government's response to complaints related to extortion, syndicates, illegal toll collection and illegal liquor.
