India-Uzbekistan Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Set $5 Billion Trade Target by 2030

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Sunday, with both leaders reviewing the entire spectrum of India-Uzbekistan relations and agreeing to elevate bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The upgrade reflects the growing depth and expanding scope of cooperation between the two countries across multiple strategic and economic sectors.

During the talks, PM Modi and President Mirziyoyev discussed ways to expand cooperation in trade and investment, infrastructure, critical minerals, mining, defence and security, innovation, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and information technology.

The two sides also placed emphasis on digital public infrastructure, including India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), as well as cooperation in education and other areas.

$5 Billion Bilateral Trade Target

India and Uzbekistan set an ambitious target of $5 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, signalling their intent to deepen economic engagement and create new opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries.

The leaders also discussed strengthening cooperation in sectors with significant long-term potential, including critical minerals, mining, infrastructure, technology and healthcare.

Several Agreements Exchanged

PM Modi and President Mirziyoyev witnessed the exchange of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements covering a wide range of areas.

The agreements include cooperation in mining, culture, education, tourism and Ayurveda, among other sectors.

The two countries also agreed on a Letter of Intent for the restoration and conservation of the Buddhist sites of Fayaz Tepa and Kara Tepa in Uzbekistan. The initiative highlights the shared civilisational and cultural links between India and Uzbekistan.

The elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership marks a significant step in the growing India-Uzbekistan relationship, with both sides seeking to broaden cooperation across economic, strategic, technological and cultural domains.
