The 38-year-old resigned less than a week after Germany suffered a Round of 32 elimination against Paraguay, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Boston. The defeat extended Germany's poor run at the FIFA World Cup, following group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022.
According to reports, Nagelsmann's decision came after discussions with senior officials of the German Football Association (DFB), who requested a change in leadership after the latest World Cup setback.
Nagelsmann had been under contract until the 2028 UEFA European Championship but chose to leave before completing his tenure. His departure brings an early end to a spell that was expected to guide Germany back among international football's elite.
The German Football Association is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as preparations for upcoming international competitions get underway.
