Karan Johar has denied rumors about K3G 2 and confirmed that Takht is not being revived. He also teased a new project, saying no one has guessed what he’s currently working on.
Filmmaker Karan Johar has firmly put an end to ongoing speculation about a sequel to his iconic film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G). Recent reports had suggested that a potential K3G 2 might be in development, possibly linked to a reworked version of his ambitious but shelved historical project Takht. However, Karan has categorically denied all such claims.
In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Karan clarified that neither a sequel to K3G nor any derivative of Takht is currently being planned. He emphasized that he has no intention of revisiting K3G with a second installment. According to him, while the film may not be perfect, what it holds in abundance is nostalgia—a powerful emotional connection that audiences across generations continue to cherish.
Karan explained that K3G has become a timeless film for many viewers who grew up watching it and still hold it close to their hearts. He expressed gratitude for being able to create a cinematic universe that continues to resonate with audiences even today. At the same time, he made it clear that he would never want to tamper with that legacy by attempting a sequel, as it could risk disappointing fans and undermining the film’s emotional value. He also noted that making a sequel to such a beloved film could set unrealistic expectations and potentially lead to failure.
Speaking about Takht, Karan shared that although the project is not being revived at the moment, it remains extremely close to his heart. He revealed that the film underwent nearly two and a half years of extensive research and writing, and he considers it one of the strongest screenplays of his career. He credited writer Sumit Roy for his contribution and expressed hope that he will eventually bring the film to life in the future.
Originally announced in February 2020, Takht featured a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor. The film was initially slated for a December 2021 release but faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually leading to its shelving.
Karan also reflected on the emotional impact of halting the project, stating that it was heartbreaking after investing so much time and effort into its development. Despite the setback, he remains optimistic and believes that every film has its own timing and destiny. He expressed hope that Takht will find its moment in his creative journey someday.
Interestingly, Karan hinted at a completely different project that he is currently developing in secrecy. He mentioned that while rumors continue to circulate about K3G 2, no one has actually guessed the project he is actively working on. He seemed pleased that his current work remains under wraps, suggesting that an unexpected announcement may be on the horizon.
